Once you’ve created your perfect handmade kitchen, you’ll no doubt want to spend as much time in there with your family as possible. As lovely as it sounds to have your children running around this new space, kitchens aren’t exactly child-friendly.
However, with a few small considerations you can feel safe knowing that your child can be free to enjoy your new kitchen as much as you do.
The stove is almost certainly the most dangerous thing in your kitchen. Stove guards are glass covers that can be fitted onto most cooker tops to stop small hands touching the burners. You can also purchase child-proof covers for the stove knobs to stop your child from turning them on, alternatively you can just remove these knobs when your oven is not in use and store them in a nearby cupboard.
It’s so easy for a child to slip and hurt itself on the sharp edge of a cabinet, so when your cabinets are being finished, make sure that any sharp corners or edges are rounded off. If you take preventative measures to keep your child out of your kitchen cabinets, you don’t have to worry about storing potentially toxic items, such as bleach or washing powder or dangerous objects such as knives. There are a number of simple child locks available cheaply that can be fitted to your kitchen cabinets and fridge freezer doors. Children’s small hands aren’t strong enough to open these doors, so make sure that any potentially dangerous items are encased within these cupboards and drawers.
When you are adding the finishing touches to your home it’s often easy to overlook the dangers that may be presented to your child. The rug that sets off the room perfectly can provide a major tripping or slipping hazard not just for children but for everyone, and should be properly secured to the floor at all times or removed completely.
Tablecloths may look decadent and dramatic when they are long, but if a child can grab onto the end of one, the table’s contents can be dislodged, sending beautiful glass vases or fruit bowls cascading onto the floor in a broken dangerous mess. By simply laying your table with a much smaller cloth that doesn’t drape from the edge, you can completely avoid this problem.
Even if you’ve childproofed your kitchen, you still may not want them to roam around the kitchen unsupervised. The easiest way to prevent them from doing so, is to install a child gate at the entrance of the kitchen. These are the same gates that you install at the top and bottom of the stairs in your home and can prevent your child from gaining access to anywhere they may not be safe.
Although we are certain that your number one priority will be your child’s safety, it can be hard not to feel limited by these enhancements. Take comfort in the knowledge that these are only temporary measures, and once your child is old enough they can be removed without tarnishing your handmade kitchen at all.
